These Are 12 of the Most Flattering Haircuts of All Time

According to the experts, Selena Gomez is onto something when it comes to finding the most flattering haircut ideas. When it comes to finding a haircut that complements her bone structure and makes the most of her hair’s natural texture or thickness, it seems Selena has already learnt one of the most important lessons—it’sallabout balance. Jordan Garrett, stylist at Hershesons, broke it all down for us when we tapped him for insight into how to find the most flattering haircut ever—and it turns out there’s no one-size-fits-all option.

“The most flattering cut is about your face shape but also how you’ll wear it,” he says. “You need to approach it this way: ‘I’m this shape, I’ve got this face, and I’ve got this type of hair’; then you work on balancing all of that with both your wardrobe and your lifestyle.

“If you’re super short, for example, super-long Kardashian-length hair is only going to enhance that. Just below the bust is long enough to still feel like you have long hair, but to also bring a little balance in. Similarly, if your vibe is super boho, I’m probably not going to suggest Uma Thurman'sPulp Fictionbob.”

Internationally renowned hairstylist Paul Edmonds agrees that the best cuts are those that have been tweaked to suit each individual. “A good stylist should always create a personalised look that works for the client, no matter their face shape,” he tells us.

“This works by adapting the cut to each person, to ensure they have the style that they wish for but in a way that still looks amazing on them. Selena Gomez is a good example of somebody who has a round face but experiments with versatile styles that look great.”

Both Garrett and Edmonds tell us that the consultation is key to getting a cut that’s right for you. And because bringing along inspiration photos is the best way to explain what you’re after, we’re delivering. Keep scrolling for 12 of the most flattering celebrity haircut ideas.

If you have curly hair, Edmonds suggests keeping it long to add length to your face. A broken-up fringe like Gabrielle Union’s can also be more flattering than a heavier, full fringe, which could take over small faces, especially if your hair is on the thicker side.

Another tip Selena Gomez has already mastered? The side-swept fringe. Edmonds tells us this can help to add some height to your face, taking away a little of the roundness. Selena also tends to keep her bob cuts a few inches below the chin, which again helps to add some length.

If you’ve got thick hair, a slightly thinned or layered cut is ideal. “It’ll prevent face-framing cuts from making you look square, while thinned ends and feathering around the edges will reduce the bulkiness that may appear around the jawline of a round face,” says Edmonds, who cites Cameron Diaz as the perfect example.

Edmonds’s top tip for softening long or rectangular faces? Try a side parting (you’re about to hear a lot about the magic of a side part) to create the illusion of more width in your face. Joan Smalls has it down.

If you have curly hair, Edmonds recommends wearing your curls short to add width to your face—think Sarah Jessica Parker circa 2002. He also notes that a full fringe is always flattering on longer faces, although Alexa Chung’s choppier version is great for a more relaxed, tousled look.

Love wearing your hair long? Edmonds suggests doing a Kim Kardashian West: “A graduation cut that frames the face will help create more width and softness.”

Haircut Ideas for Square Faces

“Flat hair can enhance the squareness of a face, making it look even more square than it really is,” says Garrett. “You want to add a little height with layers near the top, and it’s a good idea to wear your hair a little longer to add length, rather than a bob or pixie cut.” We love this style on Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

“With thick hair, you’ve got more to play with so you can mix it up a bit,” Garrett notes. “Square faces are very symmetrical, so try a side parting to throw off that symmetry and soften it slightly.” What did we tell you about side partings? Rihanna clearly knows the drill.

”If you have super-tight curls, a rounded afro is a great way to soften your face shape. Eighties-style perm curls like Julia Roberts with lots of layers are a great way to soften the face too,” says Garrett. “Don’t be afraid to go big with your curls; it’ll just add a softer touch your face.” Exhibit A: this style on Yara Shahidi.

Haircut Ideas for Heart Faces

“If you have a heart-shaped face, the world really is your oyster,” says Garrett. “Heart-shaped faces have width thanks to great cheekbones and length thanks to the point of the chin, so you really don’t need to do too much balancing.” Taylor LaShae crops all around!

“If your face is super chiselled, you can use the softness of curls to just take the edge off if there’s any severity in your look,” caveats Garrett, who notes Victoria’s Secret model Alanna Arrington as a great example.

A side-swept fringe like Reese Witherspoon’s can help add a little balance if your forehead is on the wider side. After all, not every heart-shaped face is the same!
