Aged Whiskey...In a Day?
Now Playing: Know your spirits: Whisky
For some time now, Microsoft founders and philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates have been searching for a viable solution to make contaminated water safe to drink. And they’ve just made an incredible breakthrough. The Gates Foundation has introduced the world to the Janicki Omniprocessor, a machine that takes human faeces, treats it and a few minutes later, produces drinkable water.
When about 2.5 billion people on Earth have no reliable access to this precious resource, the life-changing implications of this seemingly magical machine are almost too optimistic to compute. The Omniprocessor also acts as a safe repository for human waste which, if not disposed of properly, contaminates existing drinking water.
If you’re wondering how the Gates Foundation plans to fund an operation like this, it’s helpful to know the Omniprocessor also produces steam and ash as by-products of the treatment process. The steam is used to generate electricity, which can be used to power the Omniprocessor itself with the excess energy being sold to external consumers. The sterile ash can be used as fertilizer in agriculture. Ambitious though it may seem, Gates thinks that India would be a good fit for the project with its many entrepreneurs who could own and operate the processors.
With research this extensive and benefits this unbelievable, the only question left to ask is: Are you ready to drink water that, until five minutes ago, was poop? At the rate we’re going, you may not have a choice.
