Decrease Diabetes Risk By 50%
How we travel to work each day can have a profound effect on our health, says a new study in theAmerican Journal of Preventive Medicine.
UK researchers studied the way 20,458 people travelled to work and compared their responses to their self-reported current health conditions. They found that, compared to people who drove to work, those who used public transportation were 15% less likely to be overweight or obese, those who walked were 20% less likely, and those who biked were 37% less likely. Walking to work also decreased the chance of diabetes by 40%, while biking decreased diabetes risk by a whopping 50%.
“In public health, we know that the easiest way for people to be active is to incorporate it into everyday life,” says Jennifer Mindell, PhD, one of the researchers and an academic public health physician at the University College London. “You don’t need to be running a marathon to have the benefits.”
Not only does biking or walking to work help make some much-needed physical activity a regular part of your schedule, but it also lessens the amount of time you are sedentary throughout the day, Dr. Mindell explains. Spending too much time sitting and being still can have an effect opposite to exercise—it tires out the body and can contribute to weight gain.
Even if walking or biking to work sounds daunting to you, there are other small ways to make a workout out of your commute. Try getting off one stop earlier on the train and walk the rest of the way, or opt for taking the stairs rather than the elevator on your way up to the office, suggests Dr. Mindell. Although small, these few tweaks can help keep you at least moderately active on a daily basis while you’re moving from point A to point B.
